The King's Assasination

Memphis, Tennessee april 4th 1968; Just as Martin Luther King was addressing himself to the public supporting a strike by black garbage workers; King was shot from a building accross his stage by a sniper. As the news spread it brought with it anger thoughout the nation and the world. In 1969 James earl Ray, an escaped white convict pleaded guilty to the murder of Martin Luther King Jr and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray later rejected his confession. years of investigations came to conclusion that Ray did not act alone yet, no accomplices were ever found or identified. MJKL became the symbol of Black courage and archievement, high moral leadership and the ability to overcome racial divisions.

"Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery" - Malcolm X

in the mid 1960s many young blacks argued with MJKL's nonviolent Protests. SNCC organizers felt that they were the ones putting in all the work jsut to have MJKL receive much of the credit. In 1966 the Black Power movement captured the nation’s attention and suggested that MJKL's influence among blacks was gradualy decreasing. The Black Power movement looked more into the beliefs of Malcolm X. He insisted that black people "Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone, but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery".

SCLC Protest Campaigns

MJKL lead the first protest in 1961 Albany, Georgia. The SCLC joined local demonstrations against segregated restaurants, hotels, transit, and housing. They were more and more demonstration by the SCLC that local white officcial were forced into ending the seggreagations. The Albany police arrested many protestors and they were unable to get bail due to the shorage of the protestors' money. The SCLC joined other local protests in Birmingham, Alabama. The protest was led by SCLC member Fred Shuttlesworth, one of the ministers who had worked with MJKL in 1957 in organizing SCLC. They encouraged many other people to join, such as teenagers, and school children. This leading to an acceleration of the Protests and marches. Hundreds of singing children filled the streets of downtown Birmingham, angering Connor Commissioner of police in Birmingham, who sent police officers with attack dogs and firefighters with high-pressure water hoses against the marchers. Scenes and pictures of burtality and violence against young protesters being attacked by dogs and pinned against buildings by torrents of water from fire hoses were shown in newspapers and on televisions around the world.

Martin Luther strongly supported the use of nonviolent to protest against racial discrimination; by using marches, boycotts, and demonstrations. MLKJ was not a 5 men army all by him self. He made alliance with whites in the north and Bayard Rustina black civil rights and peace activist who helped King with his connections. MLKJ visisted India in 1959 to study more about Gandhi's principle of nonviolent persuasion and was looking foward to use it in his social protets.
